A Motorhome Road Trip to Camping Birkensee Germany
Having left Wohnmobilhafen Bergkamen we continued heading eastwards across Germany on our motorhome holiday to our next destination, Camping Birkensee near the town of Laatzen .
Laatzen is south east of Hannover and was really a half way point between our previous stop and our destination Berlin. Berlin could easily have been reached by teatime comfortably but once again we thought it would be more pleasant and relaxing to have shorter legs of driving. Todays drive on our motorhome road trip was a much shorter 2 hours and 7 minutes which meant we would arrive in time for lunch.

The campsite was easy to find. I parked in the large car park whilst I went to the office to enquire whether there was availability. As I’ve said in previous posts, I rarely book in advance, preferring instead to have the flexibility to come and go as I please. After all I’ve got everything I could want in my home from home so there’s no urgency, it’s not as if I wont have a bed for the night.
The staff were really friendly and there was space. We made our way in the motorhome through the site and around the lake. The pathways are well made out and we had a grass pitch with electric hookup over looking the lake. You could choose where you wanted which was good. There was no rigid methodology to which pitch to take although they were clearly marked meaning you had your defined space. The site is large and appears popular with day visitors too coming to use the lake or to socialise and have a drink at the bar or food.

The lake was popular with those wishing to get their toes wet as well as those who were sunbathing around the sides. There’s a mixture of semi permanent caravans and touring pitches. The site covers a large area and is set within a nature reserve surrounded by woods, open fields and surrounded by bushes. It’s not far from Hannover for those wishing to visit and the tourist opportunities that it offers.
The site has lots to offer including the bathing lake, coffee and beer garden, bread roll service, laundry room and well maintained showers and toilets.
In the afternoon, after lunch in the motorhome, we took a walk around the lake and eventually made our way to the beer garden although we opted to sit inside under cover. Now German beer is nice, that’s a forgone conclusion but it wouldn’t be complete without currywurst and pommes and lashing of mayonnaise and so of course we indulged in this wonderful German dish.
After a good nights rest, the following morning we bid farewell to camping Birkensee as we set off on our journey to Berlin.
