NC500 boss aims for more parking spaces near towns and clearer signage

The new parking would potentially offer water and waste-disposal facilities, and allow visitors to start walking into the towns.

Development of more campervan parking spaces is one of the many aims of the boss of North Coast 500 Ltd, the private firm that promotes the popular, 516-mile driving route in Scotland, a new interview has revealed.

The NC500 is considered one of the best road trips in the UK, with the route offering stunning scenery in abundance.

Speaking to The Scotsman, Clare Winskill – who recently became executive chair of the company – said that she was hoping for more facilities for motorhome and campervan parking near towns on the route, which takes in some of the country’s most beautiful scenery. These facilities would potentially include water and waste-disposal facilities.

“[These] will enable people to walk into the town and spend money but not cause issues by taking their vehicles into a place that can’t cope,” she told The Scotsman.

The interview also revealed that Winskill believes signage on the Bealach na Ba section should be increased to help deter larger vehicles from driving up the pass. “At the moment it’s advisory and I think visitors need a clearer steer,” she said. “Some visitors brought a large campervan towing a car, which simply shouldn’t happen.”

The NC500 celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025, and since its inception has become extremely popular with motorhome and campervanners. A report on the impact of the route on tourism, local businesses and the environment is due at the end of May 2026.

In other recent industry news, a popular Northamptonshire overnight stopover point has reopened as a campsite. The overnight parking at Fineshade Wood has now been upgraded to be a back-to-nature campsite, coming with upgraded facilities for ‘van owners.
