Do Premium Petrols Make Your Motorcycle Faster?
Many riders swear their motorcycle feels smoother, more powerful or even faster after filling up with premium petrol. Others argue it’s simply an expensive placebo. So, is there any truth behind the claim? In this edition of Motorcycle Mythbusters, we separate marketing claims from engineering reality.
The Myth
“Using premium petrol will make any motorcycle faster.”
It’s a claim heard at petrol stations, on internet forums and during weekend ride-outs.
Premium fuels often cost noticeably more than standard unleaded, so it’s understandable that riders expect something in return.
But the answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think.
Why People Believe It
Premium fuels are usually marketed as offering:
- Improved performance.
- Better engine cleanliness.
- Increased fuel economy.
- Enhanced throttle response.
Some riders also report that their motorcycle “feels” smoother after switching fuels.
These claims aren’t entirely without foundation—but they don’t apply equally to every motorcycle.
What Is Premium Petrol?
In the UK, standard unleaded is typically 95 RON, while premium grades are usually 97–99 RON.
The higher octane rating means the fuel is more resistant to engine knock (pre-ignition).
It doesn’t automatically contain more energy.
Instead, it’s designed for engines that are built to take advantage of higher-octane fuel.
Does Your Motorcycle Need It?
Many motorcycles—including the Honda Monkey, Honda Dax and Honda Grom—are designed to run perfectly on standard 95 RON unleaded.
Unless the manufacturer specifically recommends a higher octane fuel, switching to premium petrol is unlikely to produce a noticeable increase in power.
On the other hand, some high-performance motorcycles with high-compression engines are designed to use premium fuel. In those cases, using the recommended grade helps the engine perform as intended.
Always check your owner’s manual before deciding which fuel to use.
What About Engine Cleanliness?
This is where premium fuels may offer an advantage.
Many premium fuels contain enhanced detergent additives designed to help reduce deposits in the fuel system and combustion chamber.
Over time, these additives may contribute to cleaner injectors and intake components.
However, this is a long-term maintenance benefit rather than an instant performance boost.
Will You Notice a Difference?
For most everyday riders on motorcycles designed for standard unleaded, probably not.
Any perceived improvement is likely to be subtle and influenced by several factors, including riding conditions, weather and rider expectations.
That doesn’t mean premium fuel is “bad”—only that its benefits depend on the motorcycle you’re riding.

Premium petrol can benefit motorcycles that are specifically designed to use higher-octane fuel.
It may also offer long-term cleanliness benefits due to its detergent additives.
However, simply filling any motorcycle with premium petrol will not automatically make it faster or more powerful.
If your owner’s manual recommends standard 95 RON fuel, you’re unlikely to see a significant performance gain by paying extra.

Premium fuel certainly has its place, but it isn’t a magic performance upgrade.
The best fuel for your motorcycle is the one recommended by its manufacturer.
If you’re riding a Honda Monkey, Dax or Grom, spending the extra money on premium fuel every fill-up is unlikely to transform the riding experience.
Instead, keeping your motorcycle properly serviced, tyres correctly inflated and chain well maintained will have a far greater effect on how it performs.

The RON (Research Octane Number) measures a fuel’s resistance to knocking—not how much power it contains. A higher octane fuel only delivers a performance advantage if the engine is designed to make use of it.
