Volkswagen California sails past 200,000 mark

The 200,000th Volkswagen California to have been produced in Hanover since Volkswagen took production of its campervan in-house in 2004 rolled off the production line this week.

The milestone is all the more significant as the company passed the 100,000 milestone as recently as 2017. Last year 21,600 California 6.1 vehicles were delivered, an increase of 14.9% compared with before Covid in 2019.

Volkswagen has now committed to building the successor to the California 6.1 – due to launch next year – in Hanover as well.

Josef Baumert, a member of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ board of management, said the vehicle’s success was down to “employees who build what is surely the most successful campervan in the world every day with their know-how and passion”.

The California was first launched in 1988, but was built by Westfalia until 2004. The 200th vehicle was a California 6.1 Ocean with a 2.0-litre, 150KW engine with four-wheel drive and the DSG automatic gearbox.

The company also features in our best campervan guide, thanks to the Volkswagen Caddy California.
