CampervanCo launches hybrid campervan that could cost less than £20,000

A hybrid campervan that could cost less than £20,000 and is designed for everyday use has been launched by Scottish company CampervanCo.

Unlike ‘vans which come on one of the best vans for a camper conversion, such as the Mercedes Sprinter or Fiat Ducato, the innovative Toyota Eco Escape is based on preowned examples of a Japanese import, the Proace hybrid.

CampervanCo, which has been producing low- and zero-emission campervans for nearly a decade, says it has managed to keep the price of the vehicle down by focusing on recycling materials from the car where possible, also keeping down total emissions from the vehicle’s manufacturer.

For example, the company has designed the folding bed at the back of the ’van to run along the sliding rails in the base vehicle.

It could be an enticing prospect for ‘van owners looking for the best campervan for everyday use, as CampervanCo chief executive Gary Hayes says the vehicle is designed for multiple uses. “We want to get people away from the idea of having three vehicles in their drive, and just have one for everything,” he said.

The £19,995 starting price of the ’van is only possible with a roof tent on top – something Mr Hayes says the company has started offering as an option and is already proving popular. But the vehicle – which does not use diesel for its heating system, instead relying on electrically heated seats and beds – can also come with a pop-up roof.
