Volkswagen unveils the first images of its new-look Multivan

The new-look Volkswagen Multivan has a sharpened front end that the company insists still maintains the DNA of its “iconic predecessors”.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the first images of the new-look Multivan, which it claims “f0llows the DNA of its iconic predecessors”.

The new upgrade of the Multivan, which Volkswagen currently uses as the base vehicle for its new California model, the California Coast, is in the early stages of the design process. However, the company has released images of the new-look vehicle, with what it claims is a “sharpened” front end design, which could help it to provide the stylish good looks that the best VW campervans are known for.

In particular, the bumper and radiator grille have now been split into two distinct elements to emphasise the width of the new vehicle. The LED headlights have also been redesigned, with a new light signature.

There are new colour choices for the exterior of the vehicle as well, including a matt paint finish for the first time. Three new two-tone colour variants will also be available, including Candy White Solid/Grey Brown Metallic.

There have been changes to the optional alloy wheels too. The 17-inch and 18-inch wheels have both been redesigned, as has the popular “Halmstad” 19-inch alloy wheel.

All these changes should boost the Multivan’s credentials as one of the best vans for converting to a camper.

The Multivan is now four decades old, but the current model has proved to be the most successful ever, with sales increasing by 31 per cent last year to 38,700 vehicles – bucking the general trend, which saw total sales of all Transporter variants drop by 15.2%

More upgrades of the new vehicle will be unveiled later this summer.

One new campervan range to launch on the market recently was from Ace, which returned at the February NEC Show. The Fiat Ducato-based Ace 1200 campervan line-up includes three models and are two-berths as standard, but come with an optional pop-up roof.
