Spring Motorhome Preparation: Essential Checks Before Your First Trip

Motorhome Spring

Spring motorhome preparation is essential before your first trip of the season. After months of winter storage, a few key checks will ensure your motorhome is safe, dry, and ready for new adventures.

There’s something deeply satisfying about that first spring outing. The air is brighter, campsites reopen, and suddenly the motorhome isn’t hibernating — it’s calling. But before you answer, proper spring motorhome preparation is crucial.

Start with the exterior. Winter grime, moss, and standing moisture can hide small issues. Give the bodywork and roof a thorough clean and inspect seals around windows, roof lights, and lockers. Spring rain will quickly expose weaknesses, so catching potential leaks now saves bigger headaches later.

Next, tyres. Even if tread looks fine, check pressures and inspect sidewalls for cracking. A motorhome sitting in one position for months can develop flat spots. Adjust pressures to manufacturer specifications and check your spare while you’re at it.

Move on to fluids and engine checks. Top up oil, coolant, and screen wash. Start the engine and let it run to operating temperature. Listen for unusual noises — winter can be unkind to neglected batteries and belts.

Inside, your spring motorhome preparation continues with the water system. Flush through with fresh water, sanitise the tank if needed, and check for leaks. Run taps and test the pump. If you drained down properly in autumn, this should be straightforward — if not, inspect carefully for frost damage.

Test gas appliances and heating. Spring evenings can still dip close to freezing, especially in the UK. Ensure your boiler fires up correctly and your carbon monoxide alarm is working.

Finally, refresh your kit. Replace expired food, check first aid supplies, and restock essentials. Swap heavy winter bedding for lighter options — but don’t ditch the extra blanket just yet.
