Passer-by alerts police to motorhome stolen eight years ago

An eagle eyed passer-by earlier this month alerted Derbyshire Police to a motorhome that turned out to have been stolen eight years ago.

An observant member of the public earlier this month helped police recover a motorhome that had been stolen eight years ago.

Derbyshire Police officers were alerted to the Rapido motorhome parked in Back Lane in Hilton after a passer-by noticed that the VIN number on its windscreen had been scratched and covered over.

The VIN number is part of the CRiS identification system that provides each motorhome with a unique identification that helps in enquiries like these, and highlights the importance of good motorhome security.

It’s one of a number of security options you can have on your ‘van, along with a motorhome tracker or accessories such as the best motorhome wheel clamp.

Having looked over the vehicle, the officers also suspected that the motorhome had false number plates, so they had it seized and listed for examination by an in-house team.

This examination revealed that the motorhome was indeed on false number plates, and had been stolen as long ago as 2018.

Police are now trying to identify the correct owner of the motorhome, which by now could well be an insurance company, and to investigate who was responsible for stealing it.

Police say they “wish to thank the eagle-eyed member of the public for spotting something that was not right”.

In other recent industry news, Caravan Salon has announced it is widening its outlook for this year’s show. Returning for its 65th edition later this year, the Düsseldorf show is running with the motto “Caravan Salon opens up new worlds”.
