Calder adds an off-grid version of its Toyota Alphard-based camper conversion

The gas-free campervan has a sophisticated electrics set-up and offers full self-sufficiency.

Calder Campers has unveiled a special, off-grid version of its Toyota Alphard-based camper conversion that offers full self-sufficiency for those who prefer to go beyond campsites.

It’s gas-free and instead relies on a sophisticated electrics set-up of features comprising 300Ah Fogstar Drift lithium leisure battery, 3000W pure sinewave inverter, Victron Blue smart charger and 200W campervan solar panel (as well as the usual mains hook-up). That allows for camping kit such as a 2800W dual-function double induction hob and microwave oven, plus hot water via a six-litre boiler.

Calder’s Gordon Charlton adds: “We have further improved these campervans with a Tesla-style Android head unit and, as the power management is all Bluetooth, we have the apps running on the Android stereo head unit so owners can monitor the full ’van.”

It’s a typical camper floorplan, with side kitchen unit and rear double travel-seat-cum-bed and elevating roof. Other fittings include a 30-litre fresh-water tank, 50-litre fridge with freezer, Corian worktop and blown-air heating from the base vehicle’s petrol fuel supply.

As with all Calder’s campervan conversions using pre-owned Japanese base vehicles, it’s a great price. This first example is £34,995 and comes with three-year warranties for both the base vehicle and the conversion.

In other recent news, another campervan converter has announced it is aiming to do the NC500 completely off-grid. Camperking has partnered with Renogy for the “Freedom 500” expedition, which is showcasing the real-world capability of its new Freedom ‘van and how it can still be possible to tour off-grid without giving up comfort.
