Scottish council to allow overnight parking as a trial

Moray Council is launching a trial this summer where motorhomes and campervans will be allowed to stay overnight at a car park in Burghead.

Moray Council has launched a pilot scheme to allow overnight stays for campervans and motorhomes at a seaside car park in one of its towns as a trial this summer.

Vehicles will be allowed to stay for one night only at the Station Road car park in Burghead, after making a payment of £7 via the council’s ParkByphone app.

The trial will run during peak visitor season between 1 April and 30 November, and is being introduced at a time when many ‘van owners will be thinking of pitching up at the best motorhome sites in the UK, or even heading overseas and touring Europe in a campervan.

The council says the pilot scheme is intended to provide a safe and well managed overnight option for visitors, while supporting the local economy and respecting the needs of residents.

The council has already run a public consultation which showed strong support for designated overnight parking. It says it chose the site at Burghead, which lies on the coast overlooking the Moray Firth between Forres and Elgin, because of strong lock backing and because waste disposal facilities are already located close by.

Signs are being put up to outline terms of use, and to direct visitors to nearby shops and facilities.

Nicola Moss, the council’s Head of Operations & Environment, said, “The trial will allow us to gather real world evidence and listen carefully to feedback before any decisions are taken about next steps. We hope everyone who visits Burghead and the wider area enjoys its beauty and treats it with the respect it deserves.”

The pilot scheme from Moray Council has come as a ban on overnight parking is set to be made permanent at North Bay in Scarborough and on the A174 south of Sandsend.
